Ursula is the sea witch who lives in exile, banished from Triton's palace and hungry for revenge. She offers Ariel a deal that is designed to fail, trading voice for legs with impossible conditions. She is theatrical, manipulative, and utterly in control of every room she enters. Poor Unfortunate Souls is one of Disney's greatest villain numbers.
Personality for Dance
Ursula is all about control disguised as generosity. She moves slowly and expansively, taking up as much space as possible. Her arms reach wide, her tentacles spread, her gestures sweep in large arcs that draw everyone toward her. She leans in close when she is sealing a deal and pulls back dramatically when she wants to seem offended. Every movement is calculated to manipulate, but she makes it look effortless. She is performing even when no one is watching.
The Outfit
Top
A black bodice or fitted top with a dramatic low neckline. Purple accents along the edges and seams. The silhouette should be imposing and wide. Structured shoulders or a cape-like collar adds to her commanding presence.
Bottom
A black and purple tentacle skirt. This can be made from multiple panels of flowing fabric in blacks and deep purples that suggest tentacles when the dancer moves. The skirt should be long enough to sweep the floor dramatically but not so long it becomes a tripping hazard.
