Ursula dance recital costume

The Little Mermaid Character Guide

Ursula

Ursula is the sea witch who lives in exile, banished from Triton's palace and hungry for revenge. She offers Ariel a deal that is designed to fail, trading voice for legs with impossible conditions. She is theatrical, manipulative, and utterly in control of every room she enters. Poor Unfortunate Souls is one of Disney's greatest villain numbers.

Personality for Dance

Ursula is all about control disguised as generosity. She moves slowly and expansively, taking up as much space as possible. Her arms reach wide, her tentacles spread, her gestures sweep in large arcs that draw everyone toward her. She leans in close when she is sealing a deal and pulls back dramatically when she wants to seem offended. Every movement is calculated to manipulate, but she makes it look effortless. She is performing even when no one is watching.

The Outfit

Top

A black bodice or fitted top with a dramatic low neckline. Purple accents along the edges and seams. The silhouette should be imposing and wide. Structured shoulders or a cape-like collar adds to her commanding presence.

Bottom

A black and purple tentacle skirt. This can be made from multiple panels of flowing fabric in blacks and deep purples that suggest tentacles when the dancer moves. The skirt should be long enough to sweep the floor dramatically but not so long it becomes a tripping hazard.

Accessories

A nautilus shell necklace is essential. This is where she keeps Ariel's voice. It should be visible from the audience. Bold makeup with dramatic purple eye shadow, sharp brows, and dark lips. A beauty mark adds a touch of old Hollywood glamour.

Shoes

Black character shoes or low heels hidden beneath the long skirt. The shoes should be stable since Ursula needs to move confidently in what will be a voluminous costume.

Hair

Short, wild white or silver hair styled in a dramatic spiky updo. A wig is ideal here. The hair should look like it has its own electric energy, swept back and upward from the face.

Special Details

Ursula's lair should feel separate from the rest of the underwater world. Darker lighting, eerie greens and purples. Her entrance can involve smoke or a dramatic lighting shift. During Poor Unfortunate Souls, the tentacle fabric should be used choreographically, swirling, wrapping, reaching for Ariel.

Movement Tips

  • Ursula owns the stage from her first entrance. She does not walk on, she appears. Make the entrance count.
  • During Poor Unfortunate Souls, she should circle Ariel like a predator. The movement closes in gradually, reducing Ariel's space until there is nowhere left to go but into the deal.
  • Use the tentacle skirt fabric deliberately. Sweep it, spread it, wrap it. Each tentacle movement should feel intentional and slightly threatening.
  • Her movements should be smooth and languid most of the time, but snap to sharp and predatory at key moments. The unpredictability is part of the menace.
  • When Ursula grows in power at the climax, everything gets bigger. Wider arms, more space, louder movement. She fills the stage.

Age Recommendations

Best for ages 14-17 or adult dancers. Ursula demands a performer with commanding stage presence who is comfortable being big, bold, and theatrical. This is not a role for anyone who holds back. Strong acting ability is as important as dance skills. The best Ursulas enjoy being the villain.
