Alice in Wonderland Character Guide
The Mad Hatter is the chaotic host of the endless tea party, trapped in a permanent six o'clock. He is genuinely mad, switching moods and topics without warning. He is loud, theatrical, and impossible to predict. The tea party is his kingdom and he runs it with gleeful disorder.
The Mad Hatter moves with erratic energy. He starts a gesture and finishes with a completely different one. He leaps from his chair, climbs on the table, pours tea over his own head. Nothing follows a pattern. His body cannot decide what to do next, so it does everything at once. Sharp sudden freezes followed by explosive movement. He conducts conversations with his whole body, pointing, leaning, spinning, never still.
A colourful oversized tailcoat in greens, purples, and oranges. Mismatched patterns are encouraged. A large bow tie in a clashing colour.
Cropped or mismatched trousers. One striped leg, one polka dot. Or bright coloured shorts with tall socks.
The oversized top hat is essential. It should be tall, colourful, and have a card reading "10/6" tucked in the band. Mismatched teacups as props. A large pocket watch.
Oversized or mismatched shoes. Different coloured shoes on each foot. Bows or buckles for comedy.
Wild, teased hair in red or orange sticking out under the hat. The more dishevelled the better.
The tea party set is key. A long table with chairs at odd angles, stacked teacups, and cakes. Everything should look slightly wrong. Oversized props amplify the surreal quality.
Best for ages 10-17. The Mad Hatter suits naturally expressive, energetic dancers with strong character skills and physical comedy ability. The role rewards improvisation and fearless performance. Any age can join the tea party ensemble.
