Mirabel dance recital costume

Encanto Character Guide

Mirabel

Mirabel is the only Madrigal without a magical gift. She is curious, determined, and fiercely loyal to her family. As the lead, she carries the emotional heart of the story.

Personality for Dance

Mirabel moves with restless energy. She is always looking, reaching, wanting. Her gestures are open and expressive, arms wide when excited, hands clasped when worried. She trips, stumbles, and recovers because she is not perfect and that is the point.

The Outfit

Top

White off-shoulder peasant blouse with gathered sleeves. The neckline should be elasticated for easy movement. Colourful embroidered butterflies across the front and sleeves. Look for pre-embroidered fabric or use iron-on patches for a similar effect.

Bottom

Teal full circle skirt that hits mid-calf. The skirt should have colourful embroidered details along the hem. A built-in petticoat helps the skirt move beautifully during spins.

Accessories

Round teal glasses (can use costume frames without lenses for safety). Butterfly hair clips. Small embroidered bag worn crossbody is optional but adds character.

Shoes

Simple black character shoes or ballet flats. Espadrilles work for a more authentic Colombian look but may not be suitable for all choreography.

Hair

Long curly black hair worn down with a centre part. Use a wig if needed. Add butterfly clips scattered throughout.

Special Details

Consider adding subtle sparkle or iridescent fabric to suggest the magic she eventually discovers within herself.

Movement Tips

  • Use hand gestures constantly. Mirabel talks with her hands.
  • Quick head turns and curious glances. She is always noticing things others miss.
  • Contrast confident moments with vulnerable ones. She doubts herself but keeps going.
  • During We Don't Talk About Bruno, she should react to each family member's story.
  • Her final moments should show growth. Bigger, more confident movement by the end.

Age Recommendations

Best for ages 10-17. The role requires strong acting ability alongside dance skills. Younger dancers aged 6-9 can play young Mirabel in flashback or opening scenes.
