The Wizard of Oz Character Guide
Dorothy Gale is a farm girl from Kansas who gets swept away to the magical land of Oz by a tornado. She is kind, practical, and braver than she realizes. All she wants is to get home, but along the way she discovers that the courage and heart she was looking for were inside her all along.
Dorothy moves with honest, straightforward energy. She is not a princess and she is not trying to impress anyone. Her steps are simple and sure. She walks with purpose, looks people in the eye, and stands her ground even when she is scared. When she skips down the yellow brick road, there is genuine joy in it. When she faces the Witch, she does not back down. Her warmth comes through in how she moves toward others, always reaching out, always gathering her friends closer.
White short-sleeved blouse with a Peter Pan collar. Keep it crisp and simple. A pale blue puff sleeve blouse also works. The look is wholesome Kansas farm girl, not fancy.
Blue and white gingham pinafore dress or jumper. The skirt should be full enough for spins and skipping but not so long that it catches underfoot. Knee length is ideal. A petticoat underneath helps the skirt move nicely.
A small basket (for Toto] is the key prop. Use a simple wicker basket with a stuffed dog or leave it empty. Blue hair ribbons for the braids. No jewelry beyond simple and practical pieces.
Ruby red slippers are non-negotiable. Glitter-covered ballet flats or character shoes in red work perfectly. Apply red glitter to plain shoes with craft glue for a budget option. They need to sparkle under stage lights.
Two braids with blue ribbons tied in bows at the ends. Brown hair is traditional but any color works with the right styling. The braids should be neat and secure for all the skipping and spinning.
Consider the Kansas-to-Oz transition in your costume plan. Dorothy can start in muted, sepia-toned clothing (brown pinafore, cream blouse] and change into the bright blue gingham when she arrives in Oz. The ruby slippers can be revealed as a special moment.
Best for ages 10-15. Dorothy needs to read as young and innocent but also brave and capable. Too young and the emotional journey gets lost. Too old and the wonder of Oz feels forced. Strong musical theater dancers with good acting instincts suit this role best.
