Timon and Pumbaa

Timon is a fast-talking meerkat and Pumbaa is a warm-hearted warthog. Together they adopt the exiled Simba and teach him their worry-free philosophy of Hakuna Matata. Timon is the brains, Pumbaa is the heart, and their comedy keeps the middle of the story light when it could easily become too heavy.

Personality for Dance

Timon moves in quick bursts. Darting eyes, twitchy head turns, rapid hand gestures. He is always scanning for danger and always talking. His energy is nervous but confident, a small creature who acts bigger than he is. Pumbaa is the opposite. He moves with slow, gentle momentum. Once he starts walking, he keeps going. He is not graceful but he is sincere, and when he runs it is with surprising commitment for someone his size. Together they are physical comedy gold, always in each other's space, finishing each other's movements.

The Outfit

Top

Timon wears a warm brown or rust-colored fitted top. Keep it slim and close to the body to suggest his small, wiry frame. Pumbaa wears a reddish-brown or dark rust oversized top or tunic. Padding or a rounded bodice piece helps create his rotund shape.

Bottom

Timon in brown or tan shorts or fitted pants. Slim and quick-looking. Pumbaa in matching reddish-brown loose pants or a full jumpsuit if the padding creates the right shape.

Accessories

Timon needs a meerkat headpiece with tall, rounded ears and a pointed face. His eye area should be light with dark outlines. Pumbaa needs a warthog headpiece with small ears, tusks, and a flat nose. Both should be secure enough for physical comedy without falling off.

Timon and Pumbaa should always be in physical contact or near contact. Leaning on each other, bumping into each other, one draped across the other.
Hakuna Matata needs structured choreography that looks unstructured. It should feel like they are making it up as they go, but every beat is planned.
Timon frequently uses Pumbaa as furniture. Standing on his back, hiding behind him, sitting on his shoulder. Choreograph these moments safely with clear rehearsal.
When danger appears, they have opposite reactions. Timon freezes and then runs. Pumbaa freezes and then charges. Time it for maximum comedy.
The friendship with Simba should show physically. They start performing for him, gradually include him, and by the end of Hakuna Matata the three of them move as a unit.

Best for ages 10-15. This is ideally cast as a pair with existing chemistry, friends or siblings who already have natural timing together. Timon suits a quick, sharp dancer with comedic instincts. Pumbaa suits a performer comfortable with physical comedy who is willing to be silly. Neither role demands advanced technique, but both demand personality.
