Peter Pan Character Guide

Tiger Lily

Tiger Lily is the proud, fearless leader of her people in Neverland. She is captured by Captain Hook and refuses to betray Peter Pan, even when threatened. Peter rescues her, and she honors him with a celebration. She is brave, dignified, and commands respect from everyone on stage, including Peter.

Personality for Dance

Tiger Lily moves with grounded power. Where Peter bounces upward, Tiger Lily presses into the earth. Her feet are planted, her core is strong, and every gesture has weight and intention behind it. She does not waste movement. When she stands still, she is completely still, centerd, alert, and ready. When she moves, it is explosive, a sudden leap, a sharp turn, a stamp that echoes. She does not seek anyone's approval. Her posture is upright and proud, chin level, eyes forward. Around the other warriors she is a leader, always slightly ahead, always the first to move.

The Outfit

Top

A fringed top or tunic in warm earth tones, tan, terracotta, or deep brown. The fringe should be long enough to move when she dances but not so long that it tangles. Beaded detailing across the neckline and shoulders. A fitted bodice that allows full range of arm movement for the athletic choreography.

Bottom

A fringed skirt or shorts in matching earth tones, hitting mid-thigh for freedom of movement. The fringe creates beautiful visual lines during turns and jumps. Leggings or bike shorts underneath in a skin-tone or matching color.

Accessories

A beaded headband with a single feather standing upright at the back is her signature piece. Beaded necklaces in turquoise and coral. Arm bands or cuffs on both upper arms. Face paint in simple geometric patterns across the cheekbones, two stripes or dots, applied symmetrically.

Shoes

Tan or brown flat shoes, moccasin-style if possible. Tiger Lily dances close to the ground and her footwork is percussive. The shoes need to allow for stomps, jumps, and low crouching positions. Bare feet also work if your stage surface allows it safely.

Hair

Long, dark hair worn in two braids or a single thick braid down the back. Secure the braids well because this role involves a lot of fast head movement. Weave beads or leather wraps through the braids. The feathered headband sits across the forehead.

Special Details

Tiger Lily can carry a staff or spear for her warrior entrance. It adds a powerful visual and can be incorporated into choreography. For the celebration scene after her rescue, adding drums or percussion instruments played by her group adds texture. Warm amber lighting during her scenes contrasts with the cool blues of the Darling nursery.

Movement Tips

  • Tiger Lily's dancing is percussive and grounded. Stomps, stamps, and strong flat-footed landings. Work on making the feet audible. Every landing should have intention and weight behind it.
  • During the celebration scene, Tiger Lily leads the choreography with a call-and-response structure. She performs a phrase, her warriors repeat it, she builds on it. The energy should escalate with each round.
  • When captured by Hook, Tiger Lily does not struggle frantically. She holds herself with dignity, moves with controlled resistance, and stares Hook down. Her stillness is more powerful than thrashing.
  • The rescue scene with Peter should show respect between equals, not a damsel being saved. Tiger Lily acknowledges Peter with a nod, then immediately takes charge of her own warriors. She does not cling or thank excessively.
  • In group formations, Tiger Lily holds center or leads from the front. Her movement should be slightly bigger and sharper than her warriors, but never out of sync. She is first among equals, not separate from the group.

Age Recommendations

Best for ages 11-17. Tiger Lily needs a strong, athletic dancer with good stamina and stage presence. Contemporary, jazz, or folk dance training translates well. The role requires someone who can command attention through stillness as well as movement. This is an excellent role for a dancer who excels at grounded, powerful movement rather than the airy quality that Wendy and Tinker Bell require.
