Peter Pan Character Guide
Mr Smee is Captain Hook's first mate, the only pirate who genuinely likes his captain, and the most incompetent sailor in Neverland. He is loyal, cheerful, and completely useless in a crisis. He fetches Hook's coat, polishes his hook, and manages to make every simple task into a slapstick disaster. He is the warm heart of the pirate crew.
Smee moves like someone who has never quite figured out how his own body works. He toddles rather than walks, his arms swing too wide, and he is always slightly off balance. He bumps into things, trips over ropes, and drops whatever he is carrying. But he is never frustrated by his own clumsiness, he just picks himself up and carries on with a cheerful shrug. Around Hook, he is eager and attentive, leaning forward, nodding enthusiastically, rushing to anticipate orders and getting them wrong. He is a golden retriever in a pirate costume.
A blue and white striped long-sleeve shirt, classic pirate crew style. The shirt should be slightly too big, with the sleeves rolled up messily at different lengths. A red or maroon waistcoat over the top, buttoned unevenly so one side hangs lower than the other.
Baggy brown or tan trousers, cropped at the calf. The trousers should be loose enough for the physical comedy, big steps, pratfalls, and scrambling on the floor. A rope belt tied in a messy knot at the waist.
A red knit cap or beanie pulled down over the ears. Round wire-frame glasses that he pushes up his nose constantly. A small sewing kit or needle and thread as a prop, referencing his role as the ship's handyman. He can carry a mop or bucket for slapstick business.
Brown shoes or boots, preferably a size too big for comedic effect. The oversized shoes emphasize the clumsy walk and make the tripping look natural. If real oversized shoes are impractical, soft brown character shoes with padding at the toe work.
Bald or balding on top with tufts of gray or white hair at the sides. A bald cap with attached side hair is the easiest solution. The red cap covers most of the head, so the bald look only needs to read when the cap slips or gets knocked off during physical comedy.
Smee's best prop is a to-do list that keeps getting longer. He pulls it out, reads it, panics, and stuffs it back in his pocket. A handkerchief that he uses to polish Hook's hook, wipe his own brow, and blow his nose adds running comedy. For the Crocodile scenes, Smee should be the first to hear the ticking, reacting before Hook does, which sets up the joke.
Best for ages 10-17 or adult performers. Smee is a dream role for a dancer who loves physical comedy and character work. Precise technique matters less than timing, personality, and willingness to look silly. The pratfalls and slapstick require some physical control to stay safe, so very young dancers should be paired with careful choreography. This role works brilliantly for a parent or teacher in a mixed-age recital.
