Inside Out Character Guide
Anger is a small, red, brick-shaped emotion who reads the newspaper and explodes when things are unfair. He is passionate, blunt, and has no patience for nonsense. His head literally catches fire when he loses his temper.
Anger moves in sharp bursts. He is still, then explosive, then still again. There is no gradual build. He snaps from calm to furious in a heartbeat. His movement is grounded and low. He plants his feet, clenches his fists, and takes up less space than you would expect for someone so intense. The power comes from compression. He is a spring wound tight, and when he releases, it is sudden and forceful.
Red fitted shirt or polo shirt with a tie, buttoned up and formal. Anger takes himself seriously. The red should be a deep, saturated red.
Dark trousers, pressed and neat. Short in length to suggest his small stature. Brown belt.
A rolled-up newspaper he uses as a prop for smacking things and expressing frustration. A loosened tie that gets more undone as his anger builds through the show.
Dark dress shoes. Small and neat. He is compact in every way.
No hair, or a very short buzz cut. Consider a bald cap in a reddish tone. For the fire effect, a small LED flame headband or strips of orange and red fabric attached to a headband that stand up when activated.
The flame on his head is iconic. LED options, fabric flames on wire, or even a simple orange spotlight from above can create this effect. The fire should appear during his biggest outbursts and be visible from the back of the theater.
Best for ages 8-14. Anger is a fun role for a dancer who can commit to big, sharp energy. The physicality is demanding but the movements themselves are not technically complex, making this accessible for various skill levels.
