How the Grinch Stole Christmas Character Guide

Mayor of Whoville

The Mayor of Whoville is the self-important leader of the Who community. He loves ceremonies, speeches, and being the center of attention. Underneath the bluster, he genuinely cares about his town and its people.

Personality for Dance

The Mayor moves with puffed-up importance. Chest out, chin high, gestures broad and sweeping. He addresses everyone as if making a public speech. He is not mean, just full of himself. When things go wrong, his composure cracks and the real person shows through. By the end, he is part of the celebration like everyone else, ego set aside.

The Outfit

Top

A formal jacket or blazer in a bright Whoville color like purple or royal blue. Add a mayoral sash or chain of office across the chest. A high collar or ruffled shirt underneath adds the pompous feel.

Bottom

Matching formal trousers. Slightly too short to show colorful striped socks, keeping the Seuss whimsy even in formal wear.

Accessories

A top hat or tall ceremonial hat. A scroll or proclamation as a prop. A large decorative key to the city is an optional but fun addition.

Shoes

Shiny black character shoes or boots. The footwear should look formal and polished.

Hair

Styled neatly, possibly with a wig in a bright color. The hair should look deliberately done, like someone who spent too long getting ready.

Special Details

A megaphone or microphone prop for announcement scenes. Whoville face makeup with rosy cheeks and a slightly oversized nose adds to the Dr. Seuss aesthetic.

Movement Tips

  • Lead with the chest. The Mayor always enters a room like he owns it.
  • Use big, sweeping arm gestures when addressing the crowd. Everything is a proclamation.
  • When flustered, the composure breaks. Hands flutter, voice cracks, posture deflates.
  • In the finale, his movement should match everyone else. The ego dissolves into community.

Age Recommendations

Best for ages 12 and up. The Mayor works well for an older dancer or adult who enjoys character roles and has good comic timing. The pompous mannerisms need to read as funny, not mean.
