Mama Imelda dance recital costume

Coco Character Guide

Mama Imelda

Mama Imelda is the Rivera family matriarch who banned music after her husband left to pursue his dream. She is fierce, no-nonsense, and fiercely protective of her family. In the Land of the Dead, she is just as formidable as she was in life. But beneath the hard exterior is a woman who was deeply hurt by the person she loved most.

Personality for Dance

Mama Imelda moves with commanding authority. She points, she directs, she stamps her foot and everyone obeys. She is used to being in charge and her body shows it. Straight spine, lifted chin, hands on hips. But music is her weakness. When she hears it, her body betrays her, a foot taps, her head tilts, she catches herself swaying and stops abruptly. The moment she finally sings again should be powerful because her whole body unlocks.

The Outfit

Top

A purple or dark magenta fitted blouse or bodice with lace detailing. Elegant and traditional. Skeleton rib details painted or embroidered.

Bottom

A long, flowing purple skirt with floral embroidery. Mexican folk dress influence with modern dance-friendly construction.

Accessories

A purple flower in her hair. Skeleton face paint in elaborate Day of the Dead style with purple accents. A boot (her weapon of choice] as a prop.

Shoes

Purple or black character shoes, or ankle boots.

Hair

Black hair swept up in an elaborate bun with purple flowers. A wig styled in a traditional Mexican updo.

Special Details

Her alebrije, Pepita (a giant winged jaguar], can be represented by a group of dancers in colorful costumes forming the shape, or a large puppet. Marigold petals should follow her entrance.

Movement Tips

  • She commands every room. Plant your feet and make others come to you.
  • When music plays, show the internal battle. Her body wants to move but her will says no. Small betrayals, a tapping toe, a swaying hip.
  • The moment she gives in to music should be the release of years of grief. Start small and let it build.
  • She loves fiercely. When she hugs, it is tight and total. When she is angry, it is volcanic.
  • La Llorona should be her emotional showcase. Pain, beauty, and resilience all in one number.

Age Recommendations

Best for ages 13-17 or an adult dancer. Mama Imelda needs dramatic ability, strong stage presence, and the maturity to convey deep emotion. The role suits powerful, authoritative performers.
