Cinderella Character Guide

Fairy Godmother

The Fairy Godmother appears when Cinderella is at her lowest point, weeping in the garden after being told she cannot go to the ball. She is warm, eccentric, slightly scatterbrained, and spectacularly powerful. She turns a pumpkin into a coach and rags into a gown while singing one of the most recognisable songs in Disney history. She is pure theatrical joy.

Personality for Dance

The Fairy Godmother moves with the energy of someone who has all the magic in the world and cannot quite remember where she put it. Her gestures are big and theatrical, arms sweeping wide, hands fluttering, wand waving in every direction. She bustles and fusses and gets excited by her own magic. There is nothing sinister or mysterious about her. She is everyone's favorite grandmother with the power to rewrite reality. Her warmth is genuine and her delight in helping Cinderella is infectious.

The Outfit

Top

A pale blue or silver hooded cloak over a flowing gown. The cloak should billow when she moves, so lightweight fabric like chiffon or organza works best. Underneath, a bodice in matching blue or silver with sparkle detail. The overall look should suggest cosy warmth and magical power at the same time.

Bottom

A full-length flowing skirt in pale blue, lavender, or silver. Multiple layers create a beautiful effect when she spins. The skirt should brush the floor but not trip her during choreography. If doing more active movement, a shorter version with a handkerchief hem lets feet stay visible.

Accessories

The magic wand is essential. Make it visible from the back row, at least 30 centimeters long with a star on top. Add a ribbon or trail of fabric to the wand so it leaves a visual trace when she waves it. A brooch or pendant adds sparkle. Reading glasses perched on her nose are a charming character detail.

Shoes

Silver or blue character shoes, or soft ballet shoes if the movement is more flowing. The shoes should disappear under the skirt most of the time. Comfort matters because Fairy Godmother covers a lot of ground during the transformation sequence.

Hair

Silver or white hair pulled up in a soft, slightly messy bun. A wig works well here. The hair should look like she put it up hours ago and has been too busy doing magic to fix it. A few tendrils escaping add character.

Special Details

The transformation sequence during Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo is this character's entire reason for being on stage. Coordinate the magic wand gestures with lighting changes, costume reveals, and any special effects you have. Each wave of the wand should trigger something visible. Pumpkin appears, mice transform, rags become the gown. If budget allows, a small LED in the wand tip adds genuine magic under stage lights.

Movement Tips

  • Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo is a character number, not a dance number. Every gesture should be specific and purposeful, pointing the wand at the pumpkin, gesturing at the mice, circling Cinderella during the transformation. The choreography serves the storytelling.
  • She should physically comfort Cinderella before the magic begins. Kneel down, take her hands, wipe her tears. The audience needs to see the kindness before the spectacle. This quiet moment makes the big magic land harder.
  • Move with buoyant, light energy. Small bounces, quick turns, fluttery hand gestures. She is delighted by everything she does, as if the magic surprises her too.
  • At the end of the transformation, step back and let Cinderella have the spotlight. The Fairy Godmother's job is to reveal, not to compete. Her final gesture should be one of pride, hands clasped together, watching Cinderella like a proud parent at a recital.

Age Recommendations

Best for ages 13-17 or an adult dancer. Fairy Godmother is a wonderful role for a performer with strong stage presence and comedic timing who might not be your strongest technical dancer. The role rewards personality and theatricality over pirouettes. She needs to command the stage during Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo and then gracefully step aside. An adult teacher or parent in this role can be a real crowd-pleaser.
