Alice in Wonderland Character Guide

Queen of Hearts

The Queen of Hearts rules Wonderland through fear and tantrums. She orders beheadings for the slightest offense and terrorises everyone in her path. She is the most dangerous character in Wonderland, not because she is powerful, but because she is unpredictable and absolutely certain she is right about everything.

Personality for Dance

The Queen moves with absolute authority. She does not walk, she processes. She does not gesture, she commands. Every movement expects obedience. Her rage comes in explosive bursts, stamping feet, pointing fingers, her whole body vibrating with fury. Between outbursts, she is eerily calm and regal, which makes the next explosion more shocking. She treats her subjects like chess pieces, moving them with a flick of her wrist.

The Outfit

Top

A dramatic red and black bodice with a high collar or elaborate neckline. Gold trim and heart motifs throughout. The silhouette should be imposing.

Bottom

A massive red and black skirt, the bigger the better. Hooped or structured to create a dramatic shape. Heart patterns in the fabric or appliqued.

Accessories

A gold crown with red hearts. A heart-shaped sceptre. Red and gold jewelry. Long red gloves.

Shoes

Red or black character shoes with a heel for height and authority.

Hair

A severe black updo or heart-shaped hairstyle. A black wig styled dramatically. The hair should add to her imposing silhouette.

Special Details

Playing card soldiers should surround her, moving in formation at her command. A throne prop is useful for her entrance. Red fabric rose bushes that are being painted from white.

Movement Tips

  • She never moves for anyone. Everyone moves for her. She stands and the world rearranges itself.
  • Off with their heads should be a physical command, a sharp point, a stomp, a gesture that sends soldiers scrambling.
  • Her rage is physical comedy. The bigger the tantrum, the funnier it is, as long as there is genuine menace underneath.
  • She plays croquet with flamingos. This entire scene can be choreographed as absurd, precise physical comedy.
  • When Alice stands up to her, the Queen should be genuinely shocked. No one has ever dared.

Age Recommendations

Best for ages 12-17 or an adult dancer. The Queen needs a commanding stage presence, strong acting skills, and the ability to be both frightening and funny. The role suits confident performers who can hold the stage alone.
