Cinderella Character Guide
Anastasia and Drizella are Cinderella's stepsisters, vain, clumsy, and completely lacking in self-awareness. They believe they are beautiful, talented, and destined to marry the Prince. They are none of these things, and that gap between their self-image and reality is the source of all their comedy. They fight with each other constantly but unite against Cinderella whenever their mother tells them to.
The stepsisters move like people who think they are graceful but are not. They attempt elegant gestures that fall apart. They try to curtsy and wobble. They reach for a high note in Oh, Sing Sweet Nightingale and screech. Everything is slightly too big, too loud, and too much. Anastasia, usually in pink, is the more nervous of the two, always looking to Drizella for approval. Drizella, usually in green or yellow, is bossier and meaner, taking the lead in tormenting Cinderella. Together they mirror each other badly, always half a beat off from matching.
Overdone, clashing, and trying too hard. Anastasia wears pink or magenta with excessive ruffles, bows, and lace. Drizella wears green or chartreuse with equally overdone details. The fabrics should look expensive but the styling should look terrible, like someone with money but no taste. Big puffy sleeves, busy patterns, and too many trims.
Full skirts with petticoats, bigger than Cinderella's ball gown but less elegant. The skirts should be slightly too short or slightly too long, never quite right. Clashing colours and patterns with the top are intentional. For the ball, they go even more over the top with enormous hooped skirts they cannot navigate through doorways.
Oversized bows in their hair, chunky jewellery that does not match, fans they cannot use properly, and long gloves they keep adjusting. Each sister should have one signature prop. A hand mirror for Anastasia, a feathered fan for Drizella. They compete over who has more accessories.
Heels they cannot walk in. This is a deliberate character choice. Low character shoes with a built-in wobble, or heels one size too big that clop when they walk. The shoes should make noise and cause problems, especially when they try to dance at the ball.
Anastasia has red or auburn hair in an overly elaborate updo with too many pins and bows. Drizella has dark hair styled high and dramatic, think 18th-century excess. Both hairstyles should look like they took hours and still do not look good. Wigs work perfectly here and add to the comedy.
The slipper-fitting scene at the end is their final comedy moment. Each sister tries to force her foot into the glass slipper with increasing desperation. Stage this with big physical comedy, pulling, pushing, one sister sitting on the other's foot. The contrast with Cinderella's gentle, effortless fit is the punchline.
Best for ages 10-15. The stepsisters are dream roles for young comedians who love being silly on stage. Strong dancers who can make bad dancing look intentional are ideal. The physical comedy requires rehearsal and trust between the pair, so cast two dancers who already have good chemistry. These roles reward bravery and commitment over technical skill. Younger pairs aged 8-10 can play the roles with simpler physical comedy.
