Wicked Character Guide
Elphaba is the brilliant, passionate young woman born with green skin who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. She is an outsider from birth, mocked and rejected for being different. But she is also the bravest person in the story, willing to stand alone against injustice even when it costs her everything.
Elphaba moves with contained intensity. She makes herself small in social situations, hunching, pulling inward, taking up as little space as possible. But when she is passionate about something, her body cannot contain it. Her gestures become sweeping, her stance widens, she claims the space she was denying herself. Defying Gravity is the moment she stops shrinking and starts rising. The transformation should be visible in every line of her body.
A black fitted bodice or long-sleeved black top. For Shiz University scenes, a plain dark dress that looks institutional. For the Defying Gravity moment, a dramatic black corset-style top with structured shoulders.
A flowing black skirt, long and dramatic. Multiple layers of black fabric create beautiful movement for turns and lifts. A shorter rehearsal-friendly version works for intensive choreography.
The pointed black hat is essential for the finale. Black fingerless gloves. The Grimmerie spell book as a prop. A broom for Defying Gravity.
Black character shoes or black boots. Something sturdy that grounds her.
Long, straight black hair, loose and slightly wild. A wig is often easier than styling natural hair.
Green face and hand paint is the signature. Use theatre-grade face paint that will not smear. For Defying Gravity, consider a harness and wire for actual flight, or stage the illusion with lighting and a raised platform. A black cape with green lining creates a beautiful reveal.
Best for ages 13-17. Elphaba demands exceptional emotional range, strong contemporary or lyrical technique, and the ability to command the stage alone. This is your most dramatically gifted dancer. Younger performers aged 10-12 can play young Elphaba in flashback scenes.
