Inside Out Character Guide
Joy is the leader of Riley's emotions and the first one who appeared when Riley was born. She is optimistic, energetic, and determined to keep Riley happy at all times. Her biggest challenge is learning that happiness is not always the right answer and that Sadness has value too.
Joy moves with constant upward energy. She springs, she leaps, she reaches toward the sky. Her natural state is motion, always spinning, bouncing, or gesturing enthusiastically. She takes up a lot of space and her arms are always open. When things start going wrong, her movement becomes faster and more frantic as she tries to hold everything together. The growth comes when she finally slows down, sits still, and lets Sadness in.
A bright yellow fitted dress or leotard as the base. The yellow should be warm and golden, like sunshine. A slight sparkle in the fabric catches stage lights beautifully.
A short yellow skirt or the dress should hit above the knee to allow jumps and leaps. Yellow shorts underneath for coverage during acrobatic sections.
A blue hair clip or sparkly pin in the hair. Optional: a small yellow glow element like an LED bracelet to suggest the glow Joy has in the film.
Yellow or nude jazz shoes or ballet flats. Her feet should look light and bouncy.
Short blue pixie cut or cropped style. This is Joy's signature. Use a blue wig if the dancer's hair does not match. The blue against the yellow costume is an important contrast.
Consider using UV-reactive yellow fabric if your venue can do blacklight sections. Joy literally glowing in the dark is a showstopper. A golden orb prop for the core memory scenes ties the choreography to the story.
Best for ages 10-17. Joy needs a dancer with high energy, strong technical skills for the leaps and turns, and the acting ability to show her eventual vulnerability. This is a demanding lead role both physically and emotionally.
