Aladdin Character Guide
The Genie is a phenomenal cosmic being trapped in an itty-bitty living space. He has been granting wishes for millennia and brings explosive energy to everything he does. He is funny, warm, larger than life, and secretly lonely. All he wants is freedom, and Aladdin is the first master to treat him as a friend.
The Genie breaks every rule of movement. He can be any style at any moment because his magic allows him to shape-shift. One second he is doing Broadway jazz hands, the next he is breakdancing, the next he is waltzing with himself. He has no physical limits and should feel boundless. His energy is relentless but never mean-spirited. He fills every corner of the stage.
A blue fitted top or vest with gold trim. Shimmering or metallic fabric. The blue should be vibrant and eye-catching.
Blue harem pants or loose-fitting trousers gathered at the ankle. Gold sash at the waist. Metallic blue fabric catches stage light beautifully.
Gold cuffs on wrists suggesting his shackles. These are important because they represent his imprisonment. A microphone prop for Friend Like Me.
Gold or blue jazz shoes. He needs maximum flexibility for the range of movement required.
Bald cap or blue headwrap. A small topknot or ponytail on top if using a cap.
Blue body paint on exposed skin. Glow-in-the-dark or UV reactive elements are spectacular under black light. Smoke machine for his entrance from the lamp. Consider LED elements in the costume.
Best for ages 12-17. The Genie demands a powerhouse performer with exceptional stage presence, strong technique across multiple styles, and comedic timing. This is your most versatile dancer. Younger performers aged 9-11 can play mini-Genies in the Friend Like Me ensemble.
