Planning your recital intermission
The right intermission length keeps your show running smoothly without losing audience attention. Too short, and dancers are rushing costume changes while parents queue for bathrooms. Too long, and the energy drops and young children get restless.
Costume changes are usually the biggest factor. Young dancers need help with zips and buttons, hair needs adjusting, and there is always someone who cannot find their next costume. Having enough backstage helpers makes a bigger difference than adding more time.
Do not forget the audience. Grandparents need bathroom breaks, parents want to grab a coffee, and everyone wants to check out the merchandise table. If your venue has limited facilities, factor that into your planning.
