Beauty and the Beast Character Guide

Gaston

Gaston is the handsome, arrogant hunter who believes he deserves Belle as his wife. He is the town hero, adored by everyone except the one person he wants. He is loud, vain, and dangerous when his ego is bruised. His tavern number is pure physical comedy and bravado.

Personality for Dance

Gaston moves like he owns every room. Chest out, chin up, flexing at every opportunity. He checks his reflection in anything shiny. He poses constantly, expecting applause. His movement is big, masculine, and deliberately over the top. He lifts, he flexes, he struts. But there is a darker shift when Belle rejects him. The swagger becomes menacing, the confidence turns to aggression.

The Outfit

Top

A red tunic or fitted shirt with a deep V-neck showing off the chest. Brown leather vest over the top. The red should be bold and attention-grabbing.

Bottom

Dark brown or black trousers tucked into tall boots. Fitted to show off the physique, since Gaston would insist on it.

Accessories

A thick brown belt. Optional hunting bow or quiver prop. A yellow hair ribbon to mock Belle's.

Shoes

Tall brown boots. Character shoes with a heel add height and swagger.

Hair

Long black hair tied back in a low ponytail. Thick and glossy. A wig works well here.

Special Details

Padding for exaggerated muscles is classic comedy. Oversize biceps and a padded chest get laughs. The tavern scene can include prop mugs, antlers, and a chair for standing on.

Movement Tips

  • Every move is a flex. He cannot pick up a cup without making it about his strength.
  • The Gaston tavern number should be pure fun. He conducts his admirers like an orchestra of ego.
  • He invades personal space. He stands too close, puts his arm around people uninvited.
  • The shift from comedy to menace needs to be clear. When he decides to get Belle by force, the swagger turns sinister.
  • He mirrors whatever he thinks looks heroic. Big stances, hands on hips, profile poses.

Age Recommendations

Best for ages 13-17. Gaston suits confident dancers with physical comedy skills and strong stage presence. The role needs someone who can play arrogant without being unlikeable in the comedy scenes. The tavern number requires good partnering with the ensemble.
