Rum Tum Tugger

Rum Tum Tugger is the cool cat who does whatever he wants. He is a rock star, a rebel, and the cat all the kittens scream for. He is contrary by nature and loves every second of the attention.

Personality for Dance

Rum Tum Tugger leads with his pelvis and his swagger. He prowls the stage like he owns it, because in his mind he does. Every entrance is an event. He pauses in the doorway, lets the audience find him, then moves when he feels like it. His jazz is hip-driven and loose, all rolling shoulders and sliding footwork. He makes direct eye contact with the audience and works them like a concert, pointing, grinning, pulling focus from whoever else is on stage. He is the only cat who does not care about the rules of the Jellicle world. While everyone else is earnestly competing for the Heaviside Layer, he is signing autographs. His contrary nature shows in his movement: he does the opposite of what is expected at every turn.

The Outfit

Top

A black or dark brown unitard as the base, with a wild, oversized mane attached around the neck and shoulders. The mane is the defining feature of the costume and should be full, untamed, and slightly ridiculous in the best way. Use layered strips of faux fur, shredded fabric, or a purpose-built lion mane piece in dark brown, auburn, and black tones. The mane should move dramatically when he spins or runs.

Bottom

Leopard print or animal print accents on the unitard, either as panels on the hips and thighs or as a separate belt that sits low on the waist. A studded belt or collar worn somewhere on the costume signals his rock star identity. The overall silhouette should read as feline but rebellious.

Accessories

Fingerless gloves in black or dark leather-look fabric. A studded collar around the neck if the mane allows space for it. Wristbands or cuffs. He is the cat most likely to have accumulated jewellery and attitude. A long, dark tail with a wild tuft at the end.

Shoes

Jazz shoes or character boots in black. Rum Tum Tugger stomps and slides, so the footwear needs grip and flexibility. Avoid anything too delicate. He moves hard and the shoes need to keep up.

Hair

Wild, teased, and voluminous. A wig or heavily styled hair that reads as a cat's wild mane even outside the main mane piece. Dark brown, auburn, or black. Think rock musician meets feral cat. The hair should be slightly messy by design.

Special Details

Heavy kohl eyeliner for the cat eyes, extended into a sharp flick. A strong cat nose in dark brown or black. The makeup should read from the back row as confident and slightly dangerous. Rum Tum Tugger wears his face like armour.

Movement Tips

Rum Tum Tugger's entrance is the whole show in miniature. Build anticipation before he appears. The other cats react first, looking offstage, nudging each other. When he enters, give him a beat of stillness to let the audience find him. Then he moves, and the energy in the room shifts. Choreograph his first phrase to travel diagonally across the stage, hip-driven and unhurried, arriving at centre like he was always going to end up there.
Working the crowd is Rum Tum Tugger's signature skill. Break the fourth wall deliberately and often. He crouches at the lip of the stage and points into the audience. He singles out a spot in the house and delivers a phrase directly to it. He shrugs at the audience when the other cats try to get him to behave. Every fourth wall break should feel spontaneous even though it is choreographed to the second.
The hip-driven jazz movement that defines his style should feel rooted and heavy in the pelvis, with the shoulders rolling independently. His footwork is precise but his upper body is loose. Isolations matter here. The ribcage rolls separate from the hips. The shoulders drop one at a time. This polyrhythmic layering is what separates Rum Tum Tugger from every other cat on stage and it needs to be rehearsed until it looks effortless.
His contrary nature is the choreographic joke that runs through his whole number. Set up a movement the ensemble is doing and have him do something slightly different. When they jump, he slides. When they turn right, he turns left. When they form a neat line, he wanders out of it. This opposition should be scripted tightly so it reads as intentional rebellion rather than a mistake.

Age Recommendations

Best for ages 12-18. Rum Tum Tugger needs jazz technique and serious stage presence. The role is less about technical difficulty and more about charisma and commitment to the character. Cast the dancer who makes every teacher look twice when they walk into the room. Physical training in jazz and hip hop is a significant advantage.
