Mamma Mia Character Guide
Donna is Sophie's mother, a former lead singer of Donna and the Dynamos who now runs a crumbling taverna on a Greek island. She is strong, independent, and has raised Sophie alone. The arrival of her three ex-lovers on the day of her daughter's wedding sends her into an emotional tailspin, forced to confront the past she thought she had left behind.
Donna moves with the muscle memory of a performer. She may run a taverna now, but put on an ABBA track and her body remembers every move. She is physical, expressive, and unguarded. When she is fixing a wall, she is throwing her whole body into it. When she is upset, she paces and gestures wildly. The Winner Takes It All is her emotional breakdown, and it should feel like a woman who has been holding everything together finally letting go.
For daily scenes, practical work clothes with character. A denim shirt, a loose tank top, overalls that suggest she does everything herself. For the Dynamos reunion, a sparkly jumpsuit or disco-era outfit.
Jeans or work trousers for daily scenes. For the finale, the full 1970s Dynamos look with flared pants or a jumpsuit.
Reading glasses pushed on top of her head. Tool belt for fixing the taverna. For the Dynamos numbers, full disco accessories, big earrings, platform shoes, glitter.
Work boots or sandals for daily scenes. Platform boots or disco shoes for performance numbers.
Blonde hair, slightly messy from work. For the flashback and Dynamos scenes, styled big and 70s.
The Dynamos reunion costume reveal is a crowd-pleaser. Three sparkly matching outfits emerging from behind a screen or curtain. The costume change from work clothes to disco queen should be fast and dramatic.
Best for ages 16-18 or an adult dancer. Donna needs an exceptional performer with the emotional range for The Winner Takes It All and the showmanship for the Dynamos numbers. This is the role that makes or breaks the show.
