Jasmine dance recital costume

Aladdin Character Guide

Jasmine

Jasmine is the princess of Agrabah who refuses to be treated as a prize to be won. She escapes the palace to experience the real world and falls for a street kid who treats her as an equal. She is fierce, intelligent, and determined to choose her own path.

Personality for Dance

Jasmine moves with trained elegance that loosens when she escapes the palace. Inside the walls, she is poised and precise, every gesture controlled. Outside, she discovers freedom, and her movement becomes more expansive and joyful. She is not delicate. She is powerful and decisive. When she stands up to Jafar, her movement becomes bold and unafraid.

The Outfit

Top

A teal or turquoise crop top or fitted bodice with gold trim. Off-shoulder or with small cap sleeves. Sequins or jewel tones catch the light.

Bottom

Flowing teal harem pants in chiffon or sheer fabric over leggings. The fabric should billow with movement. A skirt overlay works for ballet-focused choreography.

Accessories

Gold headband or tiara. Gold cuff bracelets and a statement necklace. A long teal chiffon veil or scarf for dramatic effect.

Shoes

Gold ballet slippers or turquoise jazz shoes. Bare feet work for contemporary pieces.

Hair

Long black hair, thick and flowing, held back by a gold headband. A high ponytail or loose waves both work.

Special Details

For the marketplace escape scene, a hooded cloak that she discards to reveal her outfit. A tiger Rajah can be suggested with a large stuffed prop or a dancer in striped costume.

Movement Tips

  • Show the contrast between palace poise and marketplace freedom. She discovers what her body can do when no one is watching.
  • She does not follow Aladdin. She matches him. Their duets should feel like equals, not a lead and follower.
  • When she confronts authority, she plants her feet and does not back down. Grounded and strong.
  • A Whole New World should open her up. Arms reaching, head tilted back, drinking in the sky.
  • Her anger is controlled and precise, not explosive. A glare, a turned shoulder, a deliberate step away.

Age Recommendations

Best for ages 11-17. Jasmine suits strong, confident dancers with ballet or contemporary training. The role needs someone who can project authority and vulnerability. Younger dancers aged 8-10 can play young Jasmine in palace scenes.
